Although they are on rails, trams are driven like cars and buses on 'line of sight', the tram driver does not expect a clear right of way and is not under continuous control of signals.
There are times, however, when for safety or operational reasons, signals are used to control the movement of trams in exactly the same way as traffic lights control other road traffic. To avoid any possible confusion, tram signals are unlike any other type of light signal on either road or rail.
