STANDING PASSENGERS
A much larger number of standing passengers
is permitted on a tram than would be on a bus. This is because
the ride is much smoother, which reduces the risk of injury:
- Tram rails offer a flat surface, much smoother
than a road surface.
- The curves of a tram track are carefully
calculated to lead the tram gently into corners without sudden
changes in direction.
- Acceleration is automatically controlled
so that passengers are not thrown about.
- Trams do not change gear, they accelerate
smoothly and continuously.
Typically, a tram designed for 50 seated passengers
might be expected to carry a further 100 standing
Carrying capacity of full tram
