WHAT IS L.R.T.?

The expression "LRT" is confusing because it has two distinct meanings:

Light Rail Transit   = A tramway
Light Rapid Transit = A busway or possibly a tramway

It is vitally important to distinguish between these two because they represent two totally different systems.

In the past, the use of the term "LRT" has led to expectations of a tramway but allowed politicians to downgrade a tram project to a bus, causing great anger and frustration. Nowadays when a politican uses the term "LRT", one might initially suspect an inappropriate level of ignorance, but if the term continues to be used there are good grounds to suppose it is for reasons of dishonesty.
